Hello, I have a company pc windows xp professional that runs on a network. The pc logs off automatically after 5 minutes of inactivity. I have to reenter my XP log in info and computer has to reinstall all my programs in te systray each time.

This takes forever. I have adminstrator rights. How can I disable this feature, or at least increase the time before it locks me out. I forgot to mention. People have talked about schreen savers causing this.

I have gone to my control panel and display properties and I cannot find a tab for screen saver. So I can't disable what I cannot find. But as I said, I do have adminstrator rights on this pc.

It's probably a policy on your domain. I assume you are not the domain administrator? If you are an administrator, you should be able to get the screen saver tab back. Then on the right pane, double click the entry: Screensaver. Select: Not Configured. Then Right Click on an empty part of your desktop select properties, and there should now be a ScreenSaver Tab.

In there should be the logoff timeouts. Follow the screen saver advice above by gpalmer for a comfortable interval. Second, look in Device Manager to make certain that under the Network Adapter, Properties, Advanced there is no power setting to disable the adapter to save power. It is not reasonable under XP Home to expect a Group Policy or local security object to be controlling the internet adapter as you are experiencing.

As a final check make certain you router, if using a router, has not been set for short DHCP leases. Some routers have leases as short as 7 minutes; give yourself a 24 hour lease for DHCP. By the way, this is common for Windows as well. PC Doctor in Memphis. That just locks the desktop, it does not log them off the system, but I think it is what he is looking for. I would like to log off the user completely. I know if this is done then any open programs must be killed. There are also some proximity devices that determine how close you are to the computer and will log you off when you step out of range automatically no time delays and you don't have to "lock" it with keystrokes.

I'm not recommending it just letting you know of some other options. Here is a couple but there are more out there A old coworker of mine was trying one of them out and they noticed he would logon when he would visit the office on the floor above him.

I've often wondered about this, but have never taken the time to research this low priority for me item. It annoys me that Microsoft hasn't addressed this in a simple and obvious manner.

I hate when users leave for the day with their system logged on and applications running. You never know if it is safe to force a logoff e. Also, I think MS should create the functionality to preserve the state memory of open applications and their associated data for a user's logon session when a forced logoff occurs, much like hibernation does for laptops.
