Another alternative is to use the firewall to create a whitelist at each customer location and open the specific ports you require to reach the vcenter publicly, However if you can configure this you should be able to configure a VPN which would at least encrypt all communications. If you don't have any hardware to configure a VPN with I hope you have managed switches and can configure a public dvPortGroup to handle WAN traffic, then you can install a software firewall solution there are many that can provide you the secured access to the network without open access to vCenter, even if it uses its own SSL.
If for some reason you do not have a VPN to remotely manage each of your clients Virtualization environments and it requires you to travel onsite then I would expect you tend to bring along a laptop so you could use higher level tools for troubleshooting, and if so use your laptops to run the appropriate vSphere Desktop Client instead of their Domain Controllers.
Best Practices in any environment tends to be lock down your DC's whether Active Directory for Microsoft or Identity Management for Linux to run specific applications related to their functions, reduce or eliminate any amount of web browsing from them and limit dynamic applications like Flash, ActiveX etc.
The more non directly related functions that get loaded the more often any staff yours or the clients decide that browsing and other applications are probably just fine to use. The few companies I know of personally who used DC's like workstations occasionally caused an issue with Malware, trojans and viruses.
Glad to help! Thanks for the help in return. I fixed the quotes in the post based on your comment so thanks! I wish every client that I worked with had the licensing and infrastructure to not have everything heaped on the DC, but in the real world…. Even Microsoft was willing to break their own rules to make Microsoft Small Business Server back in the day. I have seen this Fix on the VMware Forum. I have tried to install 5. What OS is the DC? Not sure if that works on a server, but you might try it.
Let me know! I will try to run in compatibility mode and update. I put the installer in Compatibility mode for windows 7 and ran the install form the CLI and success was had.
Thanks, Joe! Glad to hear it and glad to have been able to help another guy in my line of work. Have a great day! Thanks you! I just used this article for work again myself as did a colleague of mine. Simple but useful. Hi Joseph I am still having an error. That has also proven to be successful in some instances. Hope that helps. Browse to the vSphere-Client folder then execute this command:. Thanks a million, On my windows Server this worked great to install esxi 5. However from this client I also tried to connect to an esxi 5 host and vmware needed another client for that go figure.
But your note about compatibility mode in Windows 7 did!!!! One other option you can try though is launching the installer with compatibility mode for Windows 7. I just right clicked on the VMware-viclient-all James, thanks for pointing that out to us. Many thanks — saved my day! Great post. Works like a charm. I can sort of understand why VMware did this… for a production DC in a secure environment, for example, it is a good setting.
Thanks so much. I am stuck in middle. Im not able to install in vcenter 6 in R2 server. I m getting error that i cant run vcenter on Domain controller. I saw your comment above to use the command but i m not able to understand where to write that command.
Please guide step wise. If you still want to stick with Windows, you will need to run the command from my blog in a command prompt window with administrative privileges.
